This is part 12 of a several part devotion dedicated to the book of Nehemiah chapter 3.
Next to him, Shemiah son of Shekaniah, the guard of the East Gate, made repairs.
Do you ever skip over chapters in the Bible like this? Go read it, Nehemiah 3, it just lists people's names and what they worked on and in what order they did. I almost skipped it, I almost just zipped right through it. I was riding in the car after doing a half good job of reading the chapter when I heard, "the gates, study the gates," in my Spirit. So I went back and I studied the gates. They mean something alright. It's a blue print laid out for us. If you need restoration in your life (who doesn't?!?!?!) or if you are needing to go through recovery (gaining back something that was lost, returning to a normal healthy place!!!!!!), here is your plan.
In part 11 we talked about the Horse Gate. The eleventh step in this restoration / recovery process. The Horse Gate is all about spiritual warfare. Being sober minded and aware of enemy attacks. We have to fight. Fight with our spiritual weapons. We have to fight for our families. Our son and daughters. Our homes. Fight
The next gate that is mentioned is The Eastern Gate. This gate is special. This gate represents the coming of our Lord and Savior.
This gate has a lot of historical / biblical facts linked to it. The Eastern Gate is closed today and has been for over a thousand years, even though people have tried multiple times to open it. It gives access to the Temple mount. Jesus came through this gate on Palm Sunday. When Jesus returns it will be through this Eastern Gate. This gate is to remind us of the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The gate that looked toward the east, and it was shut. The Lord said to me, ‘This gate shall be shut; it shall not be opened, and no one shall enter by it, for the Lord God of Israel has entered by it.’ The east gate opens and looks toward the Mount of Olives and we know that when Jesus returns He will return to this mount.
On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem. And the Mount of Olives will split apart, making a wide valley running from east to west. Half the mountain will move toward the north and half toward the south.
This gate will stay closed until His return. Let it be a reminder. A reminder that after all the spiritual battles one day this will all be resolved. One day He will come back for us. Not to deal with sin again, He has already done that, but to get those who are waiting and watching. Are you waiting on Him? Are you looking to the Eastern Gate anticipating His return?
So Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
What a beautiful picture this scripture paints. He has already dealt with our sins. Past, present, and future where handled on Calvary. When our Lord comes again it will not be to deal with sin AGAIN. It will be to bring completed salvation to those who wait upon Him. I am waiting upon Him. Will you wait with me?
Thanks so much for reading!
I would love to connect with you on a personal level!
This is a devotion that will be written in several parts as we discover the different gates and parts of the wall and what that means for us in the process of restoration and recovery. When a new devotion is written I will link here:
I have written several other devotions from the book of Nehemiah that occur before or after chapter 3. They are linked here:
