Restoration and Recovery - 11

This is part 11 of a several part devotion dedicated to the book of Nehemiah chapter 3.

Nehemiah 3:28

Above the Horse Gate, the priests made repairs, each in front of his own house.

Do you ever skip over chapters in the Bible like this? Go read it, Nehemiah 3, it just lists people's names and what they worked on and in what order they did. I almost skipped it, I almost just zipped right through it. I was riding in the car after doing a half good job of reading the chapter when I heard, "the gates, study the gates," in my Spirit. So I went back and I studied the gates. They mean something alright. It's a blue print laid out for us. If you need restoration in your life (who doesn't?!?!?!) or if you are needing to go through recovery (gaining back something that was lost, returning to a normal healthy place!!!!!!), here is your plan.

In part 10 we talked about the Water Gate. The tenth step of restoration / recovery is the lifestyle of The Water Gate. The scriptures don't mention the repairing of this wall. In chapter 8 of Nehemiah it is also mention when Ezra reads the Law to all the people and they mourn. God wants us to live a spirit filled life. Your eyes have been open and now you understand. Don't mourn. The joy of the Lord is your strength!

Next we move on to the Horse Gate. In Jerusalem horses weren't used a whole lot and they weren't used for work as they are used today. They were used in war. Occupying chariots. This gate represents spiritual warfare. Battle time.

Ephesians 6:12

For our struggle is NOT AGAINST FLESH AND BLOOD, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the POWERS OF THIS DARK WORKD and against the SPIRITUAL FORCES OF EVIL IN THE HEAVENLY REALMS.

In life we are going to have battles. These battles aren't with human enemies or humans that hate us or mean people that want to make our lives miserable, they are with spiritual forces of evil. Opposition to the rebuilding of the walls and gates.

Nehemiah 4:1

When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became angry and was greatly incensed. He ridiculed the Jews, and in the presence of his associates and the army of Samaria he said, "What are those feeble Jews doing? Will they restore their wall? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they finish in a day? Can they bring the stones back to life from those heaps of rubble - burned as they are?"

Nehemiah 4: 3

"What are they building - even a fox climbing up on it would break down their wall of stones!"

Nehemiah 4:6

So we rebuilt the wall till all of it reached half it's height, for the people worked with all their heart.

Nehemiah 4:8-9

They all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and stir up trouble against it. But we prayed to our God and posted a guard day and night to meet this threat.

Nehemiah 4:12

Then the Jews who lived near them came and told us ten times over, "Wherever you turn, they will attack us."

Nehemiah 4:13

Therefore I stationed some people behind the lowest points of the wall at the exposed places, posting them by families, with their swords, spears, and bows.

Nehemiah 4:14

"Don't be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes."

Nehemiah 4:16-18

Those who carried materials did their work with one hand and held a weapon in the other, and each of the builders wore his sword at his side as he worked.

Are you prepared for battle? I love this story in Nehemiah. Christianity consists of battles. If you are living for God and making strides in your life to serve Him and put Him above everything else. You are going to have to battle. What does the scripture say? He is like a roaring lion, waiting to see what he can devour. We battle spiritual forces of evil. We have to be prepared. We have to fight.

In chapter 4 of Nehemiah they are in a battle. They have an enemy that is taunting them. The enemy is mad because they are rebuilding the wall. They are rebuilding their protection and the enemy can not stand that. The Israelites were working so hard on their wall. They were working with all their hearts to build this protection back up. Getting our spiritual life back in order takes lots of work also. Lots of work and we have to put our whole hearts in it. We have to be prepared also! When these men were working they worked with a sword in one hand. The Bible refers to sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God Almighty! That is what we fight our battles with! The Word of God.

One of my favorite scriptures in Nehemiah is 4:14. "Don't be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes."

Fight. Fight for how far you have come. Fight to not go back. Fight for your family. Fight for your children. Fight for God and all that He has done for you. Fight for your restoration. Fight.

There is always going to be a battle until the return of Jesus. Be prepared. Have your sword in one hand has you work with the other.

Thanks so much for reading!
I would love to connect with you on a personal level!

This is a devotion that will be written in several parts as we discover the different gates and parts of the wall and what that means for us in the process of restoration and recovery. When a new devotion is written I will link here:

I have written several other devotions from the book of Nehemiah  that occur before or after chapter 3. They are linked here:
