"I asked the Lord to give me this baby, and he has granted my request. Now I am giving him to the Lord, and he will belong to the Lord his whole life.” And they worshiped the Lord there. (1 Samuel 1:27, 28 NLT)
Hannah. What a beautiful story she has. A beautiful, faithful, inspirational story is that of Hannah?! What faith and persistence she had!
She sought God's face. She prayed fervently and asked Him for favor in having a child. I'm sure there were times when she felt helpless. But she kept her faith and God rewarded her for that. Such a precious reward is that of a child and one that can only come from God (and don't you ever believe otherwise!)
But the other part of Hannah's story is when God did answer her prayer, she carried through with her promise. She gave him back to God! What a sacrifice that must have been for her! I can't even comprehend how it felt for her when she took her freshly weened, brand new baby boy to the temple and left him there. It must have felt like ripping her own heart out! But she did it just the same. What a strong and true woman of God!
So how appropriate is it when Christian parents today decide to dedicate their children to God. Granted, it is a very different ceremony than that of Hannah. I mean we don't drop them off at church to be raised by our pastors. However, it is still a very important act. It is a public profession saying that we, as parents and caregivers, vow to teach them who God is, what God wants for them, and who they are through Christ Jesus!
I don't believe it can be taken lightly, just like any other vow we make to God. It should be meaningful and memorable. It's a beautiful thing to give your children back to God after He has so lovingly given them to you. Keep in mind that it carries responsibilities with it. But don't let that stop you! You lose nothing in giving your kids to God. As a matter of fact I think the same principle applies to this as it does when Jesus tells us I'm Matthew 16:25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. What you give to God you get it back in more abundance than you can imagine!
