A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.
I think in this day and age envy is a good subject to visit occasionally. You know its an easy thing to let creep up on you. In today's world we have such access to everything under the sun, and not really even just access, fast access. Think over night shipping fast access.
It is so effortless. We have the ability to buy anything, look up anything, have anything our heart's desire. We have Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram where our friends can put pictures of all the new stuff they just bought and tell you how awesome it is. We have online boutiques where we can see where our friends are ordering things. Things that we need. Things that we want. Things that we might just be envious of.
You can be envious of lots of things. It doesn't have to be just material things. You can be envious of people's lifestyles. Or even people's blessings. Every time you log on to Facebook or Instagram you see hints and glimmers of other's lives and accomplishments. Maybe how you wish your life was going since you aren' having the best day ever. Maybe you are even envious that their life seems to be going perfect where as yours seems to be an uphill battle,
These are all easy paths to follow down, They are also paths that can seem very innocent at first but then quickly turn to have envious roots.
Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
We have to keep our heart guarded against envy. We have to keep our earthly relationships guarded against envy, and more importantly we have to keep our relationship with Jesus guarded against any envious ways. It is ok to want things but don't let that become your obsession and your source of happiness. True happiness only comes through a fulfilling relationship with the Father. It's ok to look at other peoples lives and think man they must really have it together, good for them. We are human, and it is only natural to think this way. But, with a strong warning, they are natal thoughts not Godly thoughts. Don't fall into the trap of letting envy consume you and these thoughts become the source for your depression or withdrawal from God. He blesses you, He bless other people. We should be filled with joy when one of our brothers or sisters in Christ get blessed beyond measure!
But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing.
James 3: 14-16
Therefore, putting aside all malice and all guile and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, like newborn babes, long for the pure milk of the word, that by it you may grow in respect to salvation,
1 Peter 2: 1-2
Put aside all envy. Long, seek after, the pure truth of the Word. By it you will grow in your salvation.
