Luke 10:41-42 NKJV
And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
If you haven't noticed already, I tend to use my life situations to base my Bible studies and devotions on. Well, this week is no different. I have noticed that lately I have let myself become too busy to focus on God like I should.
The verse above is Jesus telling Martha that she is too preoccupied with things in this life to focus on what truly matters like Mary has done. Martha is trying to do the right thing. She is serving people and working hard. While Mary decided it was better for her to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to His teachings.
How many times have we been Martha? Speaking for myself; all too often! I don't do irresponsible things or spend my time partying. I'm usually busy with my kids, my husband, my home, taking care of bills, or doing other family oriented tasks. Much the same as Martha in this verse. But Jesus tells her that she had made the wrong choice. That Mary has chosen well and what she has chosen won't be taken from her.
So much can be said about these verses that I don't have the time to go into at the moment. But, I would like to point out how important that last part is. It will not be taken from her. How often we struggle for a clean house, or a well cooked meal, or a job well done. But does it ever stay how we struggle to get it? No! The house is messy again with in hours, the meals are eaten, and there is always more job to do when you get back to the office. But when we focus on God and our relationship with Him and busy ourselves with His will, these things WILL NOT be taken from us. These works, unlike so many others we do, will not go unnoticed!
When we allow ourselves to be distracted by the world, we short change ourselves and God. He requires ALL of us. Not just what we can spare. And when we give Him His fair share of ourselves we will find that there is more of us to go around!
