Hebrews 13:5 (NKJV)
5 Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”[a]
From the time we started Awakeningyourday.com I knew at some point I wanted to write about being lonely. It has just never come together until now. Maybe it's the holiday season and the fact that this time of year can really be lonely for so many people.
It seems to have started on Thanksgiving day. I had the great honor of having lunch with my uncle who has been in a real battle for his life for the last six months. The Lord has healed him and brought him through so much. He is now living in an assisted living facility and is enjoying it tremendously. But that day at lunch while there were many tables full of food, family and laughter there were a few people who sat alone. I noticed it immediately but was all involved in what was going on at our table to give it much thought at the time. Later I did start to wonder about those people. Why nobody was there to share the day. Do they have no one?? Could their families just not make it at that time? Had something happened in their lives to cause them to be separated from their loved ones? Whatever the reason, they were alone and this made me sad.
You see, I myself struggle with being lonely at times. Growing up an only child you might think this would not be the case. But, if you have been reading our devotions from the start you know of my most heartfelt prayer.
There is a difference in being alone and being lonely. You can be alone and not be lonely. Many people just enjoy spending time by themselves. You can also be in a crowd of people and feel lonely. You can be with the person you love more than anyone on earth and feel lonely. Many situations and issues can cause us to feel lonely. Maybe, like me, your are waiting for a mate. Maybe you have had to relocated for work or other reasons and there is no one in the new place that you know. What ever the reason, at one time or another I'm sure everyone of us has faced being lonely.
Since Thanksgiving Day the words to an OLD pop song have been going around and around in my head.
"When you need somebody around on the nights that try you,
(Remember) I was there when you were a queen,
And I'll be the last one there beside you.
So you can call out my name... when you're only lonely.
Now, don't you ever be ashamed, you're only lonely,"
Now, I'm pretty sure you will not be hearing this song on your local gospel station. BUT, while these words have been spinning around in my head I thought these could be words of Jesus. The writer of Hebrews reminds us of the great news that our Father in Heaven has promised that HE will never leave nor forsake us!!
When we need somebody on a trying night.............HE is there. When it seems like everyone in the world has abandoned us, HE is there! All we have to do is call out HIS name. No matter what our situation we NEVER have to be ashamed at the feet of Jesus!! There may be times we don't "feel" Him there BUT He is there. HE will be the last one there beside us!!
This devotions was written from the heart of Beth Reed. My prayer this week is that each and everyone of us will never forget that we are NEVER really lonely!! He is always there!!!
I would love to hear your comments.
