Prov. 31:30 – Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.
For as long as I can remember I have struggled with my outward appearance. I was born with naturally “very” curly hair, which can be a pain to deal with! In elementary school a classmate started calling me “Brillo” after the scouring pads made of steel wool and used for cleaning dishes. This nickname continued on until I graduated high school. Besides the very curly hair I have also battled my weight my whole life. Growing up around “skinny” people and people who were always quick to point out that I had “put on a few” was difficult. I have been on every “fad” diet known to man. These issues and others led to me being extremely shy. Shy to the point of not ordering my own food in a restaurant until I was about 20 years old.
There are many times I have asked the Lord why I couldn’t be what the world sees as beautiful. Why can't I be tall, thin and blond? But His word tells me that to my Heavenly Father I am beautiful. He says that I am fearfully and wonderfully made. (Psa. 139:14) Before He formed me in the womb He knew me. (Jer. 1:5) I was created in His image. (Gen. 1:27) He says that “beauty is passing, but a woman who fears Him shall be praised.
True beauty is not the physical things that the world so often looks at as beautiful. True beauty is the light of the Lord that lives inside shining out to others!! True beauty is being a woman after God's own heart.
If you like me, struggle with how the world sees you, remember what God in Heaven thinks of you. You are beautiful to Him! You are beautiful to others with His light shinning from you.
