Halloween - Get of the Fence

III John 1:11 NKJV

Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God.

Ok, we all knew this topic was gonna come up. And if you didn't, now you do. So, here we go! Halloween!

My kids are eleven, ten, and seven. This year will be the third year
in a row that we have not participated in the celebration of Halloween. The reason for our boycott is this, it is a celebration of evil and darkness! My eyes were opened in a Sunday school class taught by Mrs. Mavalean Britt. Then I, in turn, showed my husband the light. Then, together, we spoke to our children and decided as a family that we would no longer be lead as sheep in to performing rituals we didn't know the meaning of. Our eyes were opened. We were no longer being deceived. We will not straddle the fence. We are children of light and choose to operate, daily, as such!
When the topic comes up and someone wants to know our reasoning, I give them one of the many scriptures that I believe directs us against this celebration. Such as Romans 12:9, 3 John 1:11, Psalms 101:3, Phillipians 4:8, Ephesians 5:11, 1 Corinthians 10:21, Dueteronomy 18:10-12. The reaction we get nine times out of ten is that we don't have to let our kids dress up as anything scary or evil. But the fact is, I don't think it matters if they dress as an angel or Frankenstein. The bottom line is it is an evil holiday!

Celtic priests believed that on all hallow's eve, the line between our world and the spirit world; the line between life and death, blurred. They believed that evil spirits and ghosts invaded the earth and ran about causing trouble, destroying crops, ect. They believed if they offered the evil spirits and demons sacrifices that they would be satisfied and not cause problems or destroy their crops. Hence, "trick or treat". They also believed that if they dressed as dead animals and evil spirits they would fool the demons into believing that they were one of them.

Yes, the sacrifices have turned into Reese's Pieces and Mary Jane's, and the dead animal carcasses are now vampires and Sponge Bob costumes. But the true meaning, the pagan undertones, and dark overtones and evil rituals are still there.
I'll even put the pagan origins aside and just focus on what it is today. What kind of movies are played this time of year? Scary horror movies that are far too often evil and increasingly so. What kind of candy do you find?  Bloody sawed-off body parts, vampires, witches, ghosts, goblins, and demons. What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Halloween? Scary! There's scary decor, creepy music, terrifying movies, scary, looking candy, ect.... In some of the scriptures I listed above, the Bible tells us to only think on good things and to set before or eyes no evil things. Does Halloween follow these scriptures?

If something causes fear, it is not of God! If it's not of God, it has to be of Satan! Sorry to be so blunt. But it's simply the truth of the matter. You can candy coat a rotten apple all you want, but in the end, it's still a rotten apple.

In Matthew 12:30 Jesus says that who ever is not with Him is against Him. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord and only the Lord! On December 25, October 31, and every other night of the year!

I challenge you to not be like the masses. Be set apart as we have been called to be! Don't blindly join in the celebration of evil this year. Some people have said that it's only what you make it. I disagree. I believe that is a deception of the enemy! It is what it is! And that is a night of imitating and celebrating evil and participating in wicked ceremonies. Get off the fence and let your light shine!

Thank you for reading this devotion. I was spirit-lead to write this and probably just for you! If you would like to talk or pray with me, contact me at chassidyhester@gmail.com
