As I was sitting at the church one evening, on a Tuesday night. I couldn't help but think about a quote I read from Joyce Meyers Facebook page this week.
The most noticeable sign of living a Spirit filled life is excitement. Enthusiasm about something that revolves around Jesus or the church. Excitement.
It's not quite tonight at church. My husband, Pastor Anthony, Shepherd, and I are waiting for a ministry meeting. But, as I sit and wait I'm joined by people up here at church practicing music and just working for The Lord. Adjusting sound equipment, listening to new praise and worship songs, just doing random acts of work for God. Why? It's Tuesday night. I'm sure they all have somewhere else to be. I'm sure they are all tired from the work day. To tell you the honest truth I even complain to Anthony sometimes on the way to church. "It's late, I have so much to do, I'm so exhausted, I need to cook dinner, I have to bathe the baby." The world can interfere with our attempts to live Spirit filled lives.
But, as I am reminded tonight even in the busyness of life, even in those moments of weakness revealed through complaining words, when you are filled with the Holy Spirit and try daily to walk in the Spirit your Godly Spirit filled actions show through. Your excited. You love God. Above everything else you put Him and His work first. His Kingdom and how you can help is the main topic of your conversations. Your thoughts for the most part are centered around God, your love for others, and church activities. You are living a Spirit filled life.
Sometimes the world tries to make this whole process and "Christian life" so complicated and hard to distinguish. I often hear people ask the question, how do I know if I am doing it right? How do I know if I am living a Spirit filled life? What if I am doing it all wrong? What if I am not doing enough? The answer is simple. Are you excited about God? Are you working for His good? Are you putting your wants and needs on the back burner to accomplish something great for Him? If you are, you are demonstrating Spirit filled actions. You are doing it. There is your evidence. You have excitement. You are enthusiastic about Your Savior.
If you don't have this excitement about God, if you are at a place in your life where you have to drag yourself to church on Sunday, it's not hard to get back to (or get to for the first time) this Spirit filled life. Pray this prayer with me.
God, I thank you for bringing to my attention that I don't have the excitement for you that I once had or that others have. I am so sorry I have distanced myself from You and Your Word. I want the Holy Spirit's fruits evident in my life and my daily walk with you. Holy Spirit I invite you to walk with me, guide me, encourage me, and focus my attention to the things of God. I love you God and it is the desires of my heart to serve You and do Your work with an excited attitude that brings forth light to Your Holy name.
Now get into the Word of God and SEEK after him! The way you stay connected to Him, in order to live a Spirit filled life, is by reading His word. Every day. Surrounding yourself by Godly Spirit filled influences who love God and love God's people. And, getting involved in a local church or ministry. Connect somewhere.
If you do display these actions, be encouraged, doesn't it feel wonderful :) Don't stop. Never get to that "have to" phase. Always put Him and His work first. Go the extra mile always, because He always does for you. And, don't beat yourself up so much. Even though you might complain sometimes you still go. You still put forth that effort. You still have His best interest at heart. That's what matters. Where your heart is.
You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.
Galatians 5: 16-17
So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever[a] you want.
The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.
2 Corinthians 11:3
But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
*the world trys to make this much harder than it really is - simplicity*
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
