Do or Do Not. There is no Try

I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.
-Revelation 3:15-16

The other day I was watching one of my favorite movies, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, when one of the most famous lines of the entire movie was spoken.
“Try not. Do or do not!! There is no try.”
I’ve seen this movie probably a hundred times and I’ve heard this quote maybe a million but suddenly, it took on a whole new meaning. I started thinking about what God wants from us as Christians.

In Revelation 3, it says that God spits us out if we are “lukewarm.” If we are lukewarm, we are neither hot nor cold. It means, we are neither passionate and filled with a zealous for God nor are we totally cold towards God. To be lukewarm means to talk the talk, to listen but not do, to be content with just being a Christian and attending church on Sundays because it is expected of you. There is no drive, no zeal, no passion to pursue a stronger relationship with Christ every day.

I think back to the quote: “Do or do not. There is no try.” This is how we as Christians should think. We should come at life with the mentality “I am going to be everything God wants me to be. I will live a life full of passion and zeal for God and everyday I will pursue an even stronger relationship with Him.” Don’t go about life thinking “I’ll try to be a better Christian..” or “I’ll try to listen to God more..” Don’t approach a task with the attitude that only an attempt will be made. Make your only option be to be the best person you can be for God.

God will not accept a lukewarm life- it says he would even prefer us to be totally cold rather than lukewarm. You either do what God says or you don’t- you can’t pick and choose what “Christian” habits you want to adopt. So let’s not straddle the fence. Let’s not just attempt to give it our all. Live a life of “doing” and not just “trying.” A half hearted attempt is not what God is looking for- He's looking for our whole-hearted best.

Do or do not. There is no try.

  1. Nealey, since I have been going to Awakening Life; I can truly say the Lord has changed my heart around!!! Not that I wasn't saved or even that I was not a good Christian. I loved the Lord with my entire heart but in truth we are in the end of times, the Lord is on His way to get us and God's work needs to be done!!! Not that I have a religious spirit and feel I have to work for God to get to Heaven....NO....I have what your were saying; a passion for Christ and an urgency to get His work done so people will go to Heaven with me!!! I honestly thank our Pastors (Anthony Sellers and Timothy Robertson) for that!!!! I LOVE going to a church that gets out of the religious box each week to go out and get the lost sheep!!! Never a dull moment at our church!!! Fun though.....never know each day what new thing our pastors have come up with for us to do!!! LOL!!!! ALWAYS something to do for Jesus!!!! Having a zeal for the Lord means not being selfish or lazy!
