1 Samuel 3:4
“Then the Lord called Samuel, and he answered, ‘Here I am!’”
How do you answer when the Lord calls on you?
In the verse above, The Lord calls Samuel 3 times in the middle of the night. Without hesitation, Samuel’s first response was “Here I am!” Once Samuel discovered it was the Lord calling on him, he answered, “Speak Lord, for your servant hears.” How are we answering when the Lord calls on us?
About a year ago, I was sleeping in my apartment when a loud noise woke me up. Anyone who knows me knows that I don’t wake up for ANYthing I sleep so deep. However, a loud noise from outside in the parking lot woke me and after checking the window I saw it was only a car pulling a trailer. I tried to go back asleep again, but then I felt the Lord lay it on my heart to text a friend I hadn’t spoken to in years and ask them how they were. I sat there for a moment and questioned whether it was really the Lord telling me to do it or not. “It’s too late at night, I don’t want to wake them. I’ll wait util morning” I thought out loud. “It’s been years, she’s probably changed her number.” I was literally giving the Lord excuses as to why I couldn’t do what He was telling me to do.
I finally gave in and sent a text to my friend, though, and was shocked when I actually got a response a few minutes later. My friend had actually been going through a rough time and she said that talking with me was exactly what she needed that night to help get her through.
Too many times, we hear the Lord but we don’t listen to Him or we question Him. Maybe we don’t want to do what he’s asking because we’re scared or don’t think it’s the right thing for us at the time. Perhaps we feel we are too busy or just not capable of doing what He’s calling us to do. Whatever the situation, though, we need to realize that the Lord will never ask us to do something that He doesn’t already know we can do. It’s all part of His plan- He has seen past, present, and future so of course He knows our potential what we’re supposed to do in life.
My goal is to be like Samuel; to be so full of faith in God’s plan that when he calls on me, my first response is “Here I am!”
